Kathu: A Small Phuket District Between Mountains and Sea
Located in the heart of Phuket Island, Kathu District is often overlooked by visitors heading between Phuket Town and the popular west coast beaches. Yet this largely inland area offers a fascinating mix of local life, natural scenery, outdoor adventures, cultural heritage, and family entertainment.
Its central location makes it a convenient base for exploring different parts of the island, while its quieter residential neighbourhoods provide a glimpse of everyday Phuket away from the main tourist centres. Kathu is also closely linked to Phuket's history, particularly its tin-mining past, which played an important role in the island's development.
Today, the district combines traditional communities with modern attractions, including a major water park, adventure activities, golf courses, and recreational facilities. Whether you want to explore Phuket's cultural heritage, enjoy an adrenaline-filled day, or discover a less touristy side of the island, Kathu has plenty to offer.
Kathu District: Geography, Resources and Economy
Kathu District covers approximately 67 square kilometres in the central-western part of Phuket Province. It stretches from the hilly interior towards the west coast and includes three subdistricts: Kathu, Patong, and Kamala. The district's geography is characterised by forested hills, valleys, reservoirs, and coastal areas, with the Patong and Kamala areas accounting for much of its tourism activity. Historically, Kathu was one of Phuket's important tin-mining areas, and the industry shaped both the local landscape and the district's communities.
Today, most of the economy is driven by tourism and related services, particularly hotels, restaurants, retail, entertainment, and recreational activities in Patong and Kamala. The central Kathu area is more residential and retains a stronger local character, while agriculture and small businesses also contribute to the local economy. Natural resources include freshwater reservoirs, forested hills, and remaining areas of natural vegetation, although much of the district has been developed to support its growing population and tourism industry.
Most Popular Destinations and Attractions in Kathu District
Kathu District offers a surprisingly diverse selection of attractions. For nature and outdoor activities, Bang Wad Reservoir is a popular spot for walking, jogging, and exercising in peaceful surroundings. The reservoir is surrounded by lush green hills and offers a refreshing escape from the more developed parts of Phuket. In the central area, Kathu Waterfall is another popular local nature spot, particularly during the rainy season when the water flow is strongest. For history and culture, the Phuket Mining Museum explores the island's long tin-mining heritage, while Kathu Shrine is one of Phuket's oldest Chinese shrines and is closely associated with the origins of the Phuket Vegetarian Festival. Adventure seekers can enjoy ziplining through the jungle at Flying Hanuman, while Phuket Wake Park offers wakeboarding and other water-based activities. The district also features several golf courses and recreational facilities.
Although central Kathu has no major beach, the district extends to the popular coastal destinations of Patong Beach and Kamala Beach, giving visitors easy access to two of Phuket's best-known seaside areas.
