Drawing Phuket diving and touring boat layouts was one of the very first tasks I worked on during my early years in Phuket, back in the late 1990s. At that time, the island’s diving industry was rapidly growing, and clear, well-designed visual material was becoming essential for dive operators and tour companies. Those early projects played a key role in shaping both my technical skills and my long-term interest in maritime illustration.
I learned the fundamentals of boat layout illustration from Mr. Willy Thuan while working at Andaman Graphics, where accuracy, clarity, and aesthetics were equally important. Under his guidance, I developed a methodical approach to illustrating boats that balances technical precision with a clean, visually appealing style. This experience gave me a solid understanding of how to represent vessels in a way that is both informative and easy to understand for potential customers.
Phuket is home to a wide variety of diving and touring companies, offering day trips and liveaboard experiences to some of the Andaman Sea’s most famous destinations. These include the Racha Islands, Phi Phi Islands, the Similan Islands, and many other dive sites and island groups. Each boat has its own layout, character, and purpose, and capturing these differences accurately is an essential part of the illustration process.
Boat layout illustrations typically include two to four views: a detailed side view of the vessel and plan views of each deck. Together, these drawings provide a clear overview of the boat’s structure, accommodation, and facilities. When done properly, they allow customers to instantly understand where cabins, dive decks, lounges, and other key areas are located, helping them feel more confident when choosing a trip or a liveaboard.
