Windmill Viewpoint

Fantastic Views to the South of Phuket

Windmill Viewpoint in Phuket

Located between Nai Harn Beach and Ya Nui Beach, Windmill Viewpoint — also known as Wind Turbine Viewpoint — offers one of the most accessible panoramic views in southern Phuket. The site takes its name from the large white wind turbine belonging to the Phrom Thep Alternative Energy Station, which was installed on this hilltop overlooking the Andaman Sea. Visible from far away, the turbine has become a recognizable landmark in this part of the island.

One of the great advantages of Windmill Viewpoint is how easy it is to reach. The road leading up to the viewpoint is paved and suitable for motorbikes and cars, making it a convenient stop for independent visitors and organized island tours alike. Unlike some of the more demanding viewpoints in the south, no hiking is required — you can park just a few steps from the edge.

From the viewpoint, you are treated to an impressive 180-degree panorama. Directly below lies Ya Nui Beach, a small and picturesque cove framed by rocky headlands. Further south, Promthep Cape stretches into the sea, marking the southernmost tip of Phuket and offering one of the island’s most famous sunset silhouettes.

To the west and north, the view extends toward Koh Man, Nai Harn Bay, and The Nai Harn hotel nestled along the curve of the beach. On clear days, the contrast between the deep blue sea and the bright green hills is particularly striking.

Windmill Viewpoint is also known for its paragliding activity. Thanks to the steady sea breeze and favorable wind conditions, it serves as a launch point for a local paragliding company. If you visit at the right time, you may see colorful paragliders soaring above the coastline — a fantastic sight and a great opportunity for photography.

Facilities are simple but practical. There is a small shaded shelter where visitors can sit and enjoy the breeze, as well as a modest shop selling snacks and refreshments. While the viewpoint is easy to access, caution is advised near the edge. The cliff below is steep and in places almost sheer, so it is best to keep a safe distance, especially when taking photos.

Windmill Viewpoint is particularly beautiful in the late afternoon, when the light softens and the sea takes on warmer tones. While it does not face directly west like Promthep Cape, it still offers lovely sunset views and tends to be less crowded. For visitors exploring the southern beaches of Phuket, it is a quick but rewarding stop that combines convenience, scenery, and a touch of local character.

When to Visit

Windmill Viewpoint can be visited year-round, provided weather conditions are favorable. However, the experience is generally at its best during Phuket’s dry season, from November to April, when the skies are clearer, the sea is calmer, and visibility is excellent. During this period, the Andaman Sea often displays its most vibrant shades of blue and turquoise, making the panorama particularly striking.

In the green season (May to October), the landscape remains lush and dramatic, but conditions can be more unpredictable. Passing showers, stronger winds, and occasional haze may affect visibility, although the moody skies can also create beautiful, atmospheric photos.

As for the best time of day, late morning to early afternoon usually offers the brightest sea colors for photography, especially on clear days when the sun illuminates Ya Nui Beach and Nai Harn Bay from a favorable angle.

Late afternoon is also pleasant, with softer light and cooler temperatures, and while the viewpoint does not face directly west, it can still provide lovely views as the sun begins to set toward Promthep Cape.

For the most comfortable visit, aim to avoid the midday heat and the short sunset rush, especially during high season when the viewpoint can become busier.
