Weather in Phuket & Best Time to Visit

High and Low Seasons in Phuket and Thailand

Weather in Phuket & Best Time to Visit

The tropical climate of Phuket means warm temperatures year-round, making it a popular destination in any season.

However, the island experiences two distinct periods: a dry (high) season and a rainy (low) season, each offering a different travel experience. Temperatures typically range between 25°C and 34°C, with high humidity throughout the year. Phuket is at its hottest between March and May, while the heaviest rains occur from September to October.

The best time to visit depends on what you’re looking for—sunny beach days, fewer crowds, or lower prices. While weather forecasts may sometimes predict frequent rain, showers are often short-lived and followed by sunshine. Overall, Phuket remains a year-round destination, but understanding seasonal patterns will help you plan the perfect trip.

High Season (November to April)

The high season in Phuket runs from November to April and is generally considered the best time to visit. During these months, the weather is mostly dry, with plenty of sunshine, calm seas, and lower humidity. This makes it ideal for beach activities, island hopping, and diving. Temperatures are warm but more comfortable than during the peak heat of April. December to February is particularly popular due to slightly cooler conditions and festive holidays, attracting visitors from around the world.

The main advantage of traveling during high season is the excellent weather and reliable conditions for outdoor activities. However, this also means higher prices for accommodation and flights, as well as larger crowds, especially in busy areas like Patong. Booking in advance is recommended. Despite the crowds, this period offers the most predictable and enjoyable weather for a classic tropical holiday.

Low Season (May to October)

The low season, also known as the monsoon or rainy season, runs from May to October. During this time, Phuket experiences higher humidity, stronger winds, and more frequent rainfall. September and October are typically the wettest months. Rain often comes in short, intense bursts rather than lasting all day, and sunny intervals are still common. The sea can be rough, which may affect boat trips and swimming conditions on some beaches.

One of the biggest advantages of visiting during low season is the reduced cost—hotels, tours, and flights are often significantly cheaper. The island is also quieter, offering a more relaxed atmosphere. On the downside, unpredictable weather can disrupt plans, and some boat services or island tours may be limited. However, for travelers who don’t mind occasional rain, this season can still provide a rewarding and more peaceful Phuket experience.

Summary & Best Time to Go

The best time to visit Phuket depends on your priorities. If you are looking for sunny skies, calm seas, and ideal beach conditions, the high season from November to April is the best choice. For fewer crowds and better prices, the low season from May to October offers good value, despite occasional rain.

A great compromise is the shoulder months—April and November—when you can enjoy relatively good weather with fewer tourists. Keep in mind that April is the hottest month, while mid-April also hosts the lively Songkran festival. Ultimately, Phuket’s tropical climate means you can visit year-round, but choosing the right season will help you make the most of your trip.
