The Second-Longest Beach in Phuket
Bangtao Beach is one of Phuket’s longest beaches, stretching for about six kilometres along the island’s west coast. Once home to tin mines, this wide bay has evolved into a harmonious blend of luxury resorts, local life, and tranquil stretches of sand. Despite the development of high-end hotels and villas around the Laguna Phuket complex — a self-contained resort area with golf courses, lakes, and spas — Bangtao manages to retain a relaxed, spacious atmosphere that appeals to families, couples, and long-term visitors alike.
The beach itself is a picture of serenity: soft golden sand, turquoise water, and plenty of space to unwind, even in high season. The southern section is livelier, with beach clubs, restaurants, and water activities such as jet skiing and paddleboarding. In contrast, the northern end remains peaceful and natural, ideal for long walks and quiet sunbathing.
Just north of Bangtao lies Layan Beach, a calm and secluded cove that feels almost untouched. Fringed by casuarina trees and separated from Bangtao by a small river, Layan is a favorite for locals and those seeking solitude. A small local restaurant and a few shaded areas make it perfect for a relaxing afternoon.
The waters here are generally calm, and a tiny island — Koh Kala — lies just offshore, reachable by kayak or at low tide. Layan Beach is part of Sirinat National Park, which helps preserve its natural beauty and limits commercial activity.

Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Bangtao and Layan Beaches is during the dry season (November to April), when the sea is calm and clear — perfect for swimming, kayaking, and enjoying the beach clubs.
During the low season (May to October), the area becomes much quieter, with fewer tourists and dramatic skies that appeal to photographers, though swimming is not always safe due to strong waves.
