Phuket Big Buddha

Religious Attraction & Viewpoint in Phuket

Phuket Big Buddha

Phuket Big Buddha is one of the island’s most impressive and revered landmarks. Standing about 40 metres tall atop Nakkerd Hill, this majestic statue offers a breathtaking 270-degree view over Phuket’s southern coastline, including Chalong Bay and the Andaman Sea.

Entirely covered with gleaming white marble tiles, most of which were purchased and signed by donors wishing to contribute to the project’s completion (one of them has my name on it!), the statue took nearly three years to build. Although the main structure was finished some time ago, work on the surrounding area continued for several years afterward.

The road to the Big Buddha starts from Chao Fa Road West, between Wat Chalong and Chalong Circle. Numerous signs mark the way, and the journey uphill passes through lush forest with occasional viewpoints and local eateries. For photography, morning is the best time to visit, as the statue faces east and catches the early light beautifully.

Temporary Closure Notice

Important update (2025): The Big Buddha site is currently closed to visitors due to a landslide that occurred near Nakkerd Hill in August 2024. The heavy rains triggered a mudslide that tragically caused several fatalities and led authorities to temporarily restrict access to the area for safety reasons.

At present, the road leading to the Big Buddha is blocked to all vehicles and pedestrians while restoration and safety inspections are underway. Local officials have not yet announced a reopening date. It’s recommended to check the latest updates from Phuket’s local tourism channels or news outlets before planning your visit.

While the Big Buddha remains closed, visitors can still admire distant views of the statue from lower parts of the Chalong or Kata Hills and explore nearby attractions such as Wat Chalong, Karon Viewpoint, or Promthep Cape, which all offer spectacular scenery.
