Kathu Waterfall

Discover Phuket’s rainforest

Kathu Waterfall in Phuket, Thailand

Kathu Waterfall — Nam Tok Kathu in Thai — flows down the slopes of Khao Kamala and offers visitors a refreshing escape into Phuket’s lush rainforest. Though not large or powerful, it’s an inviting spot for those who want to experience a slice of southern Thailand’s natural beauty. The surroundings are full of atmosphere: heat, humidity, the loud hum of cicadas, the earthy scent of the forest floor, and a hundred shades of green. Together they create a magical setting — especially if you take the time to climb up to the higher levels.

The area has been developed with facilities and stairways to help visitors reach the mountain’s upper sections. From the entrance to the first level, a staircase of about 130 metres winds through the forest. Along the way, you might spot large spiders — sometimes up to 15 cm across — weaving their webs beside the path. At the first level, you can take a break in the shade of the trees and enjoy the tranquility of the rainforest. The waterfall is most impressive during the rainy season (from July to December). In the dry season, the flow is smaller, but the air is still cool and pleasant.

Beyond the first pool, another staircase leads to the second level. The path is steep but dotted with picnic tables and benches next to the stream. Taking a dip in the small ponds is wonderfully refreshing on a hot day.

If you feel adventurous, continue exploring the upper regions. A few local families live in the mountains, working in fruit orchards and rubber plantations. The small forest paths offer a peaceful and relatively safe way to discover Phuket’s genuine, unspoiled rainforest — a quiet, green retreat away from the island’s busy beaches.
