Karon Plaza (Karon Bazaar)

A Casual Shopping & Dining Complex on Karon Beach Road

Karon Plaza, also known as Karon Bazaar, is a covered shopping and dining complex on Karon Beach Road, a short walk from the beach and not far from Karon Circle.

Designed primarily for tourists, it brings together small shops selling clothing, beachwear, souvenirs and accessories, along with casual restaurants and other services. In the past, the bazaar was a popular place to browse for holiday bargains and enjoy an informal meal away from the beach.

However, during my most recent visit in the middle of the afternoon in low season, I found the complex looking rather empty and run-down compared with my previous visit a few years earlier. It may be livelier in the evening, so the timing of your visit could make a difference. I'll go back during peak season to see what the place is like.

What to Buy at Karon Plaza

Karon Plaza traditionally caters to holidaymakers looking for clothing, beach accessories and inexpensive souvenirs. Depending on which shops are open, you may find T-shirts, shorts, dresses, swimwear, elephant-print trousers, sunglasses, caps, handbags, backpacks and small gifts to take home.

Some stalls also sell jewellery, watches, shoes and travel essentials, while tailors and other small businesses may offer additional services. As in many tourist-oriented markets in Phuket, some products carry imitation brand names, and quality can vary considerably, so check items carefully before buying.

Bargaining is generally expected in independent stalls, although it is worth comparing prices with shops elsewhere in Karon before making a purchase. Keep your expectations realistic: this is a casual tourist bazaar rather than a modern shopping centre, and the range of goods available may depend on how many shops are operating when you visit.

The establishment marking the entrance to Karon Plaza is a local restaurant.

What to Eat at Karon Plaza

Karon Plaza has also been known for its small restaurants and casual food outlets, providing an alternative to the larger restaurants along Karon Beach Road. The dining options have included Thai dishes, seafood, grilled skewers, rice and noodle meals, as well as simple snacks and tropical fruit. Depending on which businesses are open, you may be able to stop for a quick lunch, an informal dinner or a drink while taking a break from shopping.

The atmosphere is intended to be relaxed and informal, rather than that of a dedicated food market with rows of busy street-food stalls. During my afternoon visit, however, the complex seemed unusually quiet, and the overall impression was less appealing than it had been a few years ago. If food is your main reason for coming, it may be worth visiting later in the day, when some venues may be more active.

Other Things to Know

Karon Plaza is conveniently located on Karon Beach Road, within walking distance of the beach and the hotels along this stretch of the resort. opens daily from around 10 am to 11 pm, although individual shops and restaurants may follow different schedules. The covered layout offers some protection from the sun and rain, but it can become hot inside, particularly during the afternoon.

Bargaining may be possible at independent shops, and it is sensible to check prices and product quality before buying. My latest visit left me with mixed feelings: the bazaar looked noticeably emptier and more neglected than I remembered from a few years ago. That said, I visited in the middle of the afternoon in low season, so it should become busier after sunset, especially in high season.
