Kalim Beach

A Friendly Local Beach in Phuket

Kalim Beach in Phuket, Thailand

Kalim Beach forms the northern extension of Patong Bay, just a few minutes away from the island’s busiest resort area — yet it feels worlds apart. Though modestly developed for tourism, Kalim has kept a quiet, residential atmosphere. You’ll find a handful of small hotels, villas, and restaurants scattered along the seafront, as well as convenience stores and local attractions that cater both to visitors and to the many locals who live here and work in Patong.

One of Kalim’s highlights is its seaside food market, which appears each evening along the waterfront. The rows of small street food stalls serve an inviting range of Thai snacks — many Halal — from grilled chicken and satay skewers to pancakes and spicy salads. It’s a favorite spot for locals and visitors alike to gather at sunset, enjoying delicious bites while watching the sky fade over the Andaman Sea.

Despite its proximity to Patong, Kalim still retains a genuine Thai vibe. You might see fishermen casting their nets when the tide is up — a rare glimpse of traditional life that’s increasingly hard to find along Phuket’s west coast. Kalim Beach is quite rocky, with a narrow strip of sand in front of the school and a longer stretch past the food stalls. It’s not ideal for swimming, but it offers a peaceful setting and lovely views across Patong Bay — perfect for a quiet walk or sunset photography.

During the low season (May–November), Kalim transforms into one of Phuket’s best surfing spots, even hosting international competitions each year.

For dining, Kalim punches far above its size. It’s home to several of Phuket’s most acclaimed restaurants, such as L'Arôme by the sea and Acqua, all offering creative menus and oceanfront fine dining.

Best Time to Visit Kalim Beach

The best time to visit Kalim Beach is between December and April, when the sea is calm, the skies are clear, and sunsets are at their most spectacular. This is the ideal period for relaxing walks, dining by the sea, and taking in the tranquil local vibe. Surf enthusiasts, however, will prefer the low season from May to November, when stronger swells make Kalim one of the island’s top surfing spots.
