La Gaetana

Authentic Italian Dining in Phuket Town

La Gaetana - Authentic Italian Dining in Phuket Town

La Gaetana is one of Phuket Town's longest-established Italian restaurants, tucked away on Phuket Road, opposite the Bang Neow Chinese Shrine.

Run by Italian chef and owner Gianni and his Thai wife, the restaurant has built a loyal following among locals and visitors looking for authentic, home-style Italian cooking in an intimate setting. La Gaetana is tiny, with only a handful of tables, but that is very much part of its charm. Gianni's personal involvement, from choosing the ingredients to recommending dishes and wine, gives the restaurant an unusually warm and personal character.

The cuisine is strongly influenced by Southern Italy and particularly Gianni's family traditions from Campania. For a special Italian meal in Phuket Town, La Gaetana is a memorable little address.

Decor and Atmosphere

La Gaetana feels more like entering an Italian home than a conventional restaurant. The tiny dining rooms are decorated in warm colours with plenty of personal touches, colourful walls and details that give the place a cosy, slightly rustic character. The atmosphere is sophisticated without being formal, and the limited number of tables makes the experience feel particularly intimate. An open kitchen and the personal attention from Gianni add to the feeling that you are being welcomed into someone's home rather than simply served a meal.

There is an air-conditioned main dining room, while another smaller area provides additional seating. The restaurant is especially appealing for couples or anyone looking for a quiet and relaxed dinner. The combination of its size, décor and friendly service is a large part of what makes La Gaetana so distinctive.

What to Eat at La Gaetana

The menu focuses on classic Italian cooking, with a strong Southern Italian influence and many dishes prepared from scratch. Homemade pasta is one of the highlights, including Gianni's family recipe for fettuccine with tomato sauce and crab meat. Other popular choices include lamb, fresh fish and osso buco, while the daily specials written on the blackboard are always worth checking.

Most of the ingredients are sourced from Italy, and the restaurant makes its own sourdough, pasta, gelato and limoncello. The menu changes according to available ingredients, so there is always some room for surprises. Rather than trying to choose everything yourself, this is a place where asking Gianni for a recommendation can be part of the experience. There is also a good selection of Italian wines to accompany the food.

Things to Know

La Gaetana is a small and popular restaurant, so making a reservation is strongly recommended, particularly for dinner. Its location on busy Phuket Road means that parking immediately outside can be difficult, although the Bang Neow Chinese Shrine across the road provides a useful alternative. The restaurant is generally open for lunch on selected days and for dinner, with Wednesday currently listed as its regular closing day, but it is worth checking before visiting as opening schedules can change and Gianni also takes an annual holiday.

The restaurant has received recognition from the Michelin Guide and is classified in the moderate price category, although this is a place where you pay for the quality of the ingredients, cooking and personal service rather than simply having a cheap Italian meal. La Gaetana is best suited to a relaxed meal rather than a quick dinner.
