The Best View of Phuket Town
Khao Rang, also known as Rang Hill, is one of the easiest viewpoints to visit from Phuket Town and offers a very different perspective from the island's famous coastal lookouts.
Rising above the town, this relatively low hill provides a broad panorama across Phuket Town and towards the hills and coastline of southern Phuket. The hill is particularly popular with local residents, who come here to exercise, relax, enjoy the fresh air, or have a meal overlooking the city.
A landscaped viewpoint with a tower and viewing platform provides a comfortable place to admire the scenery, while a few dining options make it possible to turn a quick visit into a lunch or dinner outing. The hill is also home to a temple, a shrine, and a growing population of macaques.
The Hill, Viewpoint, Temples & Monkeys
Khao Rang is not a particularly high mountain, but its central position makes it an excellent natural lookout over Phuket Town. At the summit, a landscaped park and panoramic platform provide the best views, while a fitness park and walking areas make the hill popular with local residents.
On the way up, Wat Khao Rang Samakkhitham is home to Phuket's famous large golden sitting Buddha, while a smaller shrine adds another spiritual element to the hill. The surrounding trees and greenery also provide a welcome escape from the busy streets below.
Khao Rang has become increasingly well known for its long-tailed macaques, which are often seen around the parking areas, viewpoint and restaurants. They may look harmless, but they are wild animals and can be unpredictable, particularly if they associate visitors with food.
Keep your distance, secure your belongings, and despite the signs marked "monkey feeding area," avoid making their lives miserable with food unsuited to their diet (see the photo of a monkey eating ice cream in the gallery), never feed them.

Heads Up
Watch the monkeys: Macaques can be unpredictable and may grab food or belongings. Never feed or approach them.
Best time for photos: Since the viewpoint faces east, it is best to visit in the afternoon so the city is well-lit. Sunrises and sunsets are also lovely there, as is the "blue hour."
Dining with a View
One of the pleasures of visiting Khao Rang is being able to combine the viewpoint with a meal overlooking Phuket Town. Tunk-ka Cafe is the long-established option, serving Thai and Southern Thai cuisine from its leafy hillside terraces. It is particularly attractive around sunset and into the evening. Khao Rang Breeze Restaurant offers another scenic setting, with its wooden terrace surrounded by mature trees and a menu combining Thai and international dishes.
For something much simpler, a small shop near the viewpoint sells drinks, snacks and other refreshments, making it a convenient stop for people exercising or simply enjoying the view.
Tunk-ka is currently open from 11:15 AM to 10 PM most days and from 11 AM on Saturday; Khao Rang Breeze is currently listed as open from noon to 9 PM.
