Getting around Phuket is relatively easy thanks to a wide variety of transport options, from traditional local vehicles to modern ride-hailing apps.
However, unlike many major cities, public transportation is limited, and distances between beaches, towns, and attractions can be significant. Visitors often rely on taxis, rental vehicles, or informal transport to explore the island at their own pace.
Traffic can be busy in popular areas such as Patong, especially during high season, so travel times may vary. Whether you are looking for convenience, affordability, or adventure, each transport option offers a different experience.
Understanding the pros and cons of each will help you choose the best way to move around the island and beyond.
Taxi Services (Metered and Non-Metered)
Taxis in Phuket are available but operate differently from cities like Bangkok. While metered taxis exist, many drivers prefer to negotiate a fixed fare instead of using the meter. Ride-hailing apps such as Grab are widely used and often provide more transparent pricing. Taxis are comfortable, air-conditioned, and ideal for longer distances or airport transfers.
However, they are generally more expensive than other local transport options, and prices can vary depending on demand and negotiation skills. The main advantage is convenience and comfort, especially for families or travelers with luggage, while the downside is the relatively high cost compared to local standards.
Tuk-Tuk
Phuket’s tuk-tuks are quite different from those found elsewhere in Thailand. Instead of small three-wheelers, they are often red, mini-truck-style vehicles. They are widely available in tourist areas like Karon Beach and Kata Beach.
Tuk-tuks are fun and open-air, making short rides more enjoyable, but they are notoriously expensive for the distance traveled. Prices are always negotiated in advance, and there is no meter system. While they offer a quintessential tourist experience and are easy to find, they are not the most economical option. They are best suited for short trips or late-night transport when other options may be limited.
Motorbike Taxi
Motorbike taxis are a quick and efficient way to travel short distances, especially in congested areas. Drivers typically wear colored vests and can be found at designated roadside spots. They are particularly useful in busy zones like Phuket Town where traffic can slow down cars. The main advantages are speed and affordability, as they can weave through traffic easily.
However, safety is a concern, especially for inexperienced riders or those uncomfortable riding on the back of a motorbike. Helmets are sometimes provided, but not always. This option is best for solo travelers looking for a fast and cheap ride over short distances.
Renting a Motorbike
Renting a motorbike is one of the most popular ways to explore Phuket independently. It offers great flexibility, allowing you to reach remote beaches and viewpoints at your own pace. Rental shops are available all over the island, particularly in tourist areas like Rawai. Prices are relatively low, making it an economical choice for longer stays. However, it comes with significant risks.
Roads can be steep and slippery, and accidents are common among tourists unfamiliar with local driving conditions. Additionally, you legally need an international driving permit. While it’s a convenient and adventurous option, it is best suited for experienced riders.
Renting a Car
Renting a car is a comfortable and practical option, especially for families or groups. It allows you to explore the island in air-conditioned comfort and at your own pace. International and local rental companies operate at Phuket International Airport and across the island. The main advantage is safety and convenience compared to motorbikes, particularly during long trips or rainy weather.
However, traffic can be challenging, and parking in busy areas may be limited. Costs are higher than motorbike rentals, but still reasonable by international standards. This option is ideal for travelers who prefer comfort and independence without the risks associated with two-wheel travel.
Local Bus Services (Songthaews)
Phuket’s local buses, known as songthaews, are converted trucks with benches in the back. They operate mainly between Phuket Old Town and major beaches such as Patong Beach. These buses are very affordable and provide an authentic local experience.
However, they are slow, do not run frequently, and usually stop operating early in the evening. They also follow fixed routes and do not connect directly between beaches, often requiring a transfer in Phuket Town. While they are the cheapest option, they are less convenient for travelers with limited time or those staying outside main routes.
Intercity Bus Services
For travel beyond Phuket to other provinces, intercity buses are a reliable and budget-friendly option. Buses depart from the main terminal in Phuket Town and connect the island to destinations such as Krabi, Surat Thani, and Bangkok. These buses range from basic to VIP coaches with air conditioning and reclining seats.
The main advantage is cost-effectiveness, especially for long-distance travel. However, journeys can be lengthy, and schedules may be limited compared to flights. This is a good option for budget travelers who don’t mind longer travel times and want to explore mainland Thailand.
Long-Tail Boat Taxis
Long-tail boats are a traditional and scenic way to travel between nearby beaches and islands. You’ll commonly find them in coastal areas like Rawai Beach. These boats are perfect for short trips to nearby islands or hidden beaches not accessible by road. They offer a unique and memorable experience, often with beautiful coastal views.
However, prices must be negotiated, and costs can add up, especially for private trips. Weather conditions can also affect availability and safety. While not the cheapest option, long-tail boats are ideal for those looking to combine transport with a bit of adventure.
Ferry Services
Ferries are the main way to travel from Phuket to nearby islands and provinces. Regular services connect Phuket to destinations such as Phi Phi Islands, Koh Lanta, and even Krabi. Ferries are relatively comfortable and affordable, with options ranging from standard boats to faster speedboats.
The main advantage is accessibility to some of Thailand’s most famous island destinations. However, travel times can vary, and seas can be rough during the monsoon season. This is the best option for island hopping, offering a balance between cost and experience.
