Wat Karon Night Market, also known as Karon Temple Market, is a small but lively market held in the grounds of Wat Karon, officially known as Wat Suwan Khiri Khet, in the heart of Karon.
Located about 500 metres inland from Karon Beach, the market combines the atmosphere of a Thai temple with the colourful bustle of a traditional night market. You can come here to sample Thai street food, browse inexpensive clothing and souvenirs, or simply enjoy a relaxed evening among the stalls.
The temple itself is still an active place of worship, adding a distinctive cultural setting that you will not find at most of Phuket's other night markets.
What to Eat at Karon Temple Market
Food is one of the main reasons to visit Wat Karon Night Market, with stalls offering a good selection of Thai snacks and simple meals. You will find grilled meat and chicken skewers, sausages, spring rolls, fried and steamed snacks, fresh fruit, Thai sweets and ready-made curries.
Pad Thai is another popular choice, while adventurous visitors can look for more unusual snacks such as fried insects. There are also stalls selling sushi and other quick bites, making it easy to build your own dinner by sampling several dishes as you walk around. Prices are generally reasonable, and the market is a good place to try a variety of Thai street food without committing to a restaurant meal.
What to Buy at Wat Karon Night Market
The shopping side of Wat Karon Night Market is aimed largely at holidaymakers, with plenty of inexpensive clothing, beachwear and souvenirs. Expect to find colourful dresses, shorts, T-shirts, sarongs and the ubiquitous Thai elephant pants, as well as swimsuits, handbags, jewellery and watches. You can also find small gifts and handicrafts, including carved soaps, handmade dolls and other decorative items, while some stalls sell skincare products such as aloe vera and coconut oil.
Don't expect a high-end shopping experience, but it is a convenient place to pick up something inexpensive to take home. Bargaining is generally expected at stalls selling clothing, bags and souvenirs.
Tips & Things to Know
Wat Karon Night Market is held every Tuesday and Friday, on the grounds of Wat Karon along Patak Road in Karon. The market generally runs from around 4:00 pm to 10:00 pm, although individual vendors may arrive later or leave earlier. Arriving around 4:30–5:00 pm gives you time to look around before the market becomes busier and also lets you see the temple in daylight.
Remember that this is an active Buddhist temple, so dress respectfully when entering the temple grounds. Bring some cash, wear comfortable shoes and take your time browsing. If you are mainly interested in food, come hungry and try several small portions rather than settling for one dish.
