A Food Market with a Shopping Section
Malin Plaza is a popular night market at the southern end of Patong, located on Prachanukhro Road, just a short walk from Patong Beach.
Unlike some of Phuket's more traditional markets, Malin Plaza is largely covered, making it a convenient place to eat and shop even when the weather is less cooperative. The market is divided roughly into two sections, with food stalls occupying the front and shopping stalls towards the back.
It is relatively quiet during the afternoon but becomes much livelier after sunset, when visitors come for grilled seafood, Thai street food, drinks and casual shopping. Entry is free, and the relaxed atmosphere makes Malin Plaza an easy place to combine dinner with a little souvenir hunting.
What to Eat at Malin Plaza
Food is undoubtedly one of the main attractions at Malin Plaza, with a large selection of stalls serving freshly prepared Thai and international dishes. Grilled seafood is particularly popular, with prawns, squid and fish cooked to order, while other stalls offer Pad Thai, fried rice, noodle dishes, grilled meats and chicken skewers. You can also find fresh fruit, smoothies, pancakes and plenty of Thai desserts, including mango sticky rice.
Several stalls offer halal food as well, although there is no separate halal section, so check individual stall signs if this is important to you. The central area has long rows of shared tables where you can sit down with your food and drinks. Prices are generally reasonable for Patong, although some stalls charge more than you would find away from the tourist areas.
What to Buy at Malin Plaza
The shopping section at the back of Malin Plaza offers the kind of inexpensive holiday shopping you would expect from a Patong night market. Clothing and beachwear are particularly well represented, with T-shirts, dresses, shorts, sarongs, elephant-print trousers, swimsuits and sandals among the typical finds. You will also come across handbags, souvenirs, jewellery, small handicrafts, wood carvings and various spa and beauty products.
A tailor is also located towards the back of the market if you are interested in having clothes made to measure. Don't expect a unique shopping experience, as much of the merchandise is similar to what you will find at other tourist markets around Phuket. However, Malin Plaza is convenient for picking up inexpensive gifts, beachwear or a few small souvenirs. Bargaining is generally expected when buying clothing and souvenirs.
Tips & Things to Know
Malin Plaza is open daily, with current listings generally showing opening hours from around 11:00 am to 11:00 pm, although some sources list midnight closing. There is little reason to come early in the afternoon, as many stalls become active later in the day. For the full experience, arrive from around 6:00 pm onwards, when the food stalls are operating and the market starts to fill up.
The busiest period is generally between about 8:00 and 10:00 pm, so finding a seat at the shared tables can become more difficult. The market is covered but not air-conditioned, so it can feel warm on still evenings. Bring cash, especially for smaller stalls, and take your time walking through both the food and shopping sections.
