Karon Beach
A Spacious, Relaxed, and Family-Friendly Beach in Phuket

Separated from Kata Beach by a small headland, Karon Beach stretches for nearly five kilometres, making it one of the longest beaches in Phuket. Despite the many hotels and resorts lining the beach road, Karon never feels crowded thanks to its generous width and open space. It’s an ideal spot for long walks at sunset, with soft sand underfoot and a gentle sea breeze.
Water sports such as parasailing and jet-skiing are available in certain zones, though they’re not as dominant as in Patong. In the central part of the beach, visitors can join in on casual beach volleyball games, while local vendors roam the sand selling cold drinks, snacks, and souvenirs.
At both ends of Karon Beach, the rocky headlands create good snorkeling spots, and divers can explore a small, little-known pinnacle reef located just 80 metres off the southern end. Lying at about 10 metres deep, it’s home to colorful reef fish and small sea creatures—ideal for beginner divers.
Behind the beach, Karon Centre forms a lively resort town filled with restaurants, shops, and relaxed nightlife options. In the evening, you’ll find a selection of beer bars and live-music venues similar to those in Patong, though on a much smaller and more family-friendly scale. Couples and families will appreciate Karon’s balance between activity and tranquility.

Karon Beach Drawbacks
-
Less “authentic” Thailand: Like other west-coast resorts, Karon feels modern and international rather than traditional.
-
Limited beachfront hotels: Most resorts are across the road from the beach rather than directly on it.
-
Jet ski scams: A few operators have been known to overcharge or falsely claim damages—use caution.
-
Expensive tuk-tuks: Drivers often ask high fares, even for short trips.
-
Scarce parking: Finding a parking spot can be difficult, especially in high season.
-
Higher prices: Expect to pay more than in Phuket Town or less touristy inland areas.
When to Visit
The best time to visit Karon Beach is from December to April, when the sea is calm and the weather is warm and dry. Between May and October, the waves pick up—making it suitable for surfers but less ideal for swimming. This low season, however, brings quieter beaches and lower hotel rates.
