Mai Khao Beach
The Longest Beach in Phuket

Stretching for nearly 11 kilometres along Phuket’s northwest coast, Mai Khao Beach is the longest beach on the island — a pristine, windswept shoreline where tranquillity still reigns. Despite being just a short drive from Phuket International Airport, this part of the island feels remarkably untouched. Its wide expanse of golden sand, bordered by pine trees and the turquoise Andaman Sea, gives a sense of seclusion that’s increasingly rare in Phuket.
Located just north of Nai Yang, the beach is part of the Sirinat National Park, a protected area that preserves its natural charm and prohibits large-scale construction. As a result, there are only a handful of high-end resorts discreetly hidden behind the treeline, such as the JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa and the Renaissance Phuket Resort & Spa.
The atmosphere here is peaceful — you’ll mostly find resort guests, locals on evening walks, and planes descending low overhead for landing, which has become a fun photo opportunity at the southern end of the beach near the airport.

During high season, the sea is calm and ideal for swimming, but in low season (from May to October) strong waves and undercurrents make swimming dangerous. The beach’s remoteness and lack of crowds make it perfect for long walks, picnics, or simply enjoying Phuket as it was decades ago.

Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Mai Khao Beach is from November to April, when the sea is calm, the skies are clear, and the temperatures are perfect for swimming and sunbathing. Early mornings and late afternoons are especially beautiful for photography and long walks. During the low season, the beach becomes a quiet escape ideal for solitude, though swimming should be avoided due to strong currents.
