Ao Yon
A Tranquil Beach North of Chalong Bay
Ao Yon is a small beach of around 700 metres located north of Chalong Bay, near Cape Panwa on Phuket's southeastern coast. It is one of the few beaches on Phuket's east coast where swimming is pleasant, thanks to its sheltered position. The area has changed considerably over the past 30 years, with hotels, restaurants, and small shops gradually appearing along the road overlooking the beach.
Strictly speaking, Ao Yon consists of two beaches separated by a rocky headland: the larger main beach Ao Yon Yai, and the smaller Ao Yon Noi. Together, they form a peaceful bay surrounded by green hills and coconut trees.
Ao Yon is bordered by numerous private homes, and for many years some local residents were not particularly welcoming towards outsiders. Access to the beach was even severely restricted for a period, although this was not officially permitted. Limited parking, particularly for cars, has also contributed to Ao Yon remaining a relatively quiet beach, mostly visited by people staying in the immediate area.
Today, Ao Yon offers most of what visitors need for a relaxing beach holiday while retaining a peaceful atmosphere thanks to its somewhat secluded location. Several small restaurants and cafés line the beach, while massage shops and minimarts provide additional conveniences.
Sailing is also an important part of life in the area. Sail in Asia operates a watersports and sailing centre at Ao Yon Bay, offering sailing-related activities and training. The Flamingo Beach Front Cafe provides another attractive option for spending time by the water, with food, drinks, and seating directly on the beach.
Swimming and Activities at Ao Yon
The calm, relatively shallow waters are one of Ao Yon's main attractions. The bay is sheltered from much of the swell affecting Phuket's west coast, making it particularly appealing to visitors looking for a quieter place to swim.
The beach is not a major watersports destination, but the calm conditions are suitable for activities such as kayaking and paddleboarding when available. Sailing is particularly appropriate here, with boats and sailing schools operating from the bay.
The smaller section of Ao Yon is also worth exploring for its more secluded atmosphere. At one end, a stream flows from the hills towards the sea, while the surrounding vegetation gives this part of the bay a particularly natural feel.

Ao Yon Heads Up
Although Ao Yon is only around a dozen kilometres from Phuket Town, its secluded location makes it feel somewhat removed from the main tourist areas.
Parking, particularly for cars, is not always easy.
Ao Yon is much quieter than Phuket's major west-coast beaches, so nightlife and entertainment options are limited.
The beach can become noticeably busier on weekends and during local sailing or dragon boat activities.
Best Time to Visit
Ao Yon can be visited throughout the year, but the best time is from November to April, when Phuket generally experiences its driest weather and the sea is at its most inviting. December to March usually offers the most reliable conditions for enjoying the beach, swimming, and sailing.
One advantage of Ao Yon is its sheltered location on Phuket's east coast. Unlike the west-coast beaches, which can experience strong waves and currents during the southwest monsoon, Ao Yon often remains relatively calm during the rainy season. Conditions can nevertheless change, so always check the sea before swimming.
If you visit during the hotter months, early morning or late afternoon is particularly pleasant, while the surrounding trees provide welcome shade during the middle of the day.
