The Three-Beach Viewpoint on Phuket’s West Coast

Windmill Viewpoint in Phuket

Karon Viewpoint is one of the most famous viewpoints on Phuket. Located roughly halfway between Kata Noi Beach and Nai Harn Beach, it offers a magnificent panoramic view over three bays: Kata Noi Beach, Kata Beach, and Karon Beach.

The viewpoint was already established when I arrived on the island in 1996. It was originally created in the early 1990s and was known at the time as Kata Viewpoint, before its name gradually evolved to Kata–Karon Viewpoint, and eventually to its current name, Karon Viewpoint.

Overlooking rolling hills covered in tropical vegetation, the viewpoint features a small parking area that can accommodate around fifteen vehicles. Next to it stands a distinctive rounded, pyramid-like structure about five or six meters high. The three-beach panorama can be admired from the top of this structure, which is covered by a roof and accessible by stairs, but can also be seen from the bottom of the structure.

Because it is included in many island tours that promise to “discover Phuket in one day,” Karon Viewpoint is a popular stop for visitors looking to capture a memorable photo of the island’s coastline. That said, joining a tour specifically to visit the viewpoint is not necessary. Like Windmill Viewpoint, it sits directly along Route 4030, the scenic road that runs along much of Phuket’s west coast, making it very easy to reach by scooter or car.

As with many popular tourist spots, the viewpoint also has a small commercial side. A few shops sell cold drinks and snacks, an automatic gasoline pump is available to refill your motorbike tank, and toilets are also provided. Unfortunately, there are sometimes people offering tourists the chance to pose for photos with captive eagles.

Karon Viewpoint Heads Up

  • The viewpoint is very popular with tour groups, especially late morning and early afternoon.

  • Limited parking (about 15 vehicles).

  • Occasionally, people offer photos with captive birds of prey, which some visitors may prefer to avoid.

Best Time to Visit Karon Viewpoint

The best time to visit Karon Viewpoint is during the dry season from November to April, when the sky is usually clear and the Andaman Sea displays its most beautiful shades of blue.

For photography, early morning is often the best moment. The air is cooler, the light is softer, and the viewpoint is generally quieter before the arrival of tour buses. Late afternoon can also be pleasant, with warm light illuminating the coastline.

Although the viewpoint faces west, it is not the ideal spot for watching the sunset because the sun disappears behind the hills before reaching the horizon. However, the panoramic view of the three bays remains impressive at any time of day when the weather is clear.
